On March 3, 1876, something very strange reportedly fell from the sky over a farm near Olympia Springs in Bath County, Kentucky.
It was meat.
Pieces of raw meat scattered across the property, and before long, people were examining samples and trying to figure out what on earth had happened. More than 150 years later, we still don’t have an answer everyone agrees on.
There have been explanations, of course. One of the best-known theories involves vultures regurgitating partially digested meat while flying overhead. It’s certainly possible. But with no preserved scene to examine and no way to reconstruct exactly what happened that day, possible isn’t the same thing as proven.
That’s what makes the Kentucky Meat Shower such an interesting mystery to revisit with tarot. I’m not asking the cards to prove that meat literally rained from the sky—or to replace the historical evidence we do have. I want to look at the part of the story that has never quite closed: Where did it come from, what might witnesses have misunderstood, and why has the answer remained just out of reach?
About This Reading
This reading uses tarot to explore the Kentucky Meat Shower as an unresolved historical mystery. The cards can’t tell us exactly what fell over that Kentucky farm in 1876 or prove which explanation is correct. Instead, I’m looking at the patterns that come through in the cards and how they compare with what we know about the event.
Where the cards seem to line up with an existing theory, I’ll point it out. Where they leave us with another question, I’ll leave that open too.
