Between 1587 and 1590, a group of English settlers vanished from the Roanoke Colony on what is now Roanoke Island, North Carolina. The settlement was intended to establish a permanent English presence in the New World. When the colony’s governor, John White, returned from England after an extended absence, he found the settlement completely abandoned.
No bodies were discovered. There were no signs of violence or struggle. The only clue left behind was a single word—“CROATOAN”—carved into a wooden post.
At the time, understanding what had occurred was extremely difficult. Transatlantic travel was slow and unpredictable. Written records were limited. Communication with nearby Indigenous communities was inconsistent and often strained. Environmental challenges, supply shortages, and political instability further restricted any investigation.
Despite centuries of study, speculation, and retelling, the fate of the Roanoke colonists has never been conclusively determined. The case remains unresolved not because of conflicting evidence, but because so little evidence exists at all.
This tarot reading does not attempt to solve the mystery. It follows the story suggested by the cards, without trying to force an ending.
