Books for People Who Always Guess the Killer

Illustrated mystery investigation board with books, suspect silhouettes, red string, a magnifying glass and a black cat, featuring the title “Books for People Who Always Guess the Killer” and LilliDigest.com branding.

Some people can read three chapters of a murder mystery and already know who did it. They notice the strangely specific alibi, the suspect who is trying a little too hard to seem helpful or the one detail the author keeps casually mentioning.

Then they spend the rest of the book waiting to see if they were right.

If that sounds familiar, this list of murder mystery books that keep you guessing is for you. These murder mysteries make the killer genuinely difficult to identify. Some bury the answer under a long list of suspects. Others use unusual formats, shifting timelines or several equally convincing explanations.

I kept this list focused on books where the mystery actually involves identifying a killer. These are not simply thrillers with a random surprise added at the end.

Everything below is spoiler-free. I am not going to tell you whether the clues are fair, which suspects deserve more attention or why the final reveal works. That would ruin the entire point.

Classic Mysteries That Still Fool Readers

Some mysteries have remained popular for decades because the solution is not easy to see coming. Even when the author gives readers the information they need, knowing which details matter is another problem entirely.

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie

Ten strangers receive invitations to a private island, but their mysterious host never appears. Each guest has a troubling secret, and a recorded message accuses every person in the house of being responsible for someone’s death.

Then the guests begin dying.

The island offers nowhere to hide and no easy way to leave. As the group gets smaller, fear and suspicion turn the remaining guests against one another.

This is one of the best-known closed-circle mysteries for a reason. The limited setting makes it feel as though identifying the killer should be simple. It is not.

And Then There Were None

$10.99 $9.99

Ten strangers are invited to an isolated island, accused of crimes from their past and then killed one by one with no clear way to escape.

The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie

Roger Ackroyd knows more than he should about the death of a woman he planned to marry. Before he can reveal everything, he is found murdered in his study.

Nearly everyone around him has a reason to hide something. Hercule Poirot must separate the people protecting private secrets from the person covering up a murder.

Poirot begins examining the household, the people closest to Ackroyd and the secrets they were trying to keep from him. The investigation appears straightforward at first, but nearly every answer creates another question.

This is a good choice for anyone who enjoys watching Poirot sort through conflicting stories and details that do not quite fit together.

Without a traditional narrator explaining what matters, readers must decide how much they trust each message and the person who sent it.

Everyone in My Family Has Killed Someone by Benjamin Stevenson

Ernest Cunningham belongs to a family in which everyone has killed someone. Some of those deaths were accidents. Others are harder to explain.

The family gathers at an isolated mountain resort, where old grudges and unresolved problems quickly return. When another person dies, Ernest attempts to explain what happened while promising to follow the rules of a traditional mystery.

Ernest speaks directly to the reader and openly discusses how murder mysteries work. That makes the book feel fair, but it does not make the killer obvious.

There are plenty of secrets in the Cunningham family, and knowing someone is hiding something does not tell you what they are hiding.

Closed-Circle Mysteries Where Everyone Is a Suspect

A closed-circle mystery traps a small group of people in one location and removes easy access to outside help. The killer has to be someone nearby, but that does not make choosing the right person any easier.

If the remote setting is as much fun for you as solving the mystery, you may also enjoy these creepy books set in isolated locations.

The Guest List by Lucy Foley

An Unwanted Guest by Shari Lapena

Guests arrive at a secluded hotel in the Catskills expecting a quiet winter weekend. A snowstorm knocks out the power and cuts the hotel off from the outside world.

Then one of the guests dies.

What first appears to be an accident becomes harder to explain as the conditions worsen. With no phone service and no easy way to call the police, the guests are left to watch one another.

The hotel contains a manageable number of suspects, but each new piece of information makes someone else look guilty. It has the familiar feeling of an old-fashioned country-house mystery with a modern group of characters.

Darker Murder Mysteries With Difficult Reveals

These final two books move beyond the traditional country house and locked-room setup. They are darker, but they still give readers a central question to solve: Who is responsible?

The Snowman by Jo Nesbø

A woman disappears on the night of the season’s first snowfall. A snowman is found outside her home, and investigator Harry Hole begins looking for connections to other missing women.

The case expands as new clues suggest the crime may be part of a pattern that has gone unnoticed for years.

This is a darker police investigation with more locations and possible suspects than the closed-circle mysteries above. Readers are not simply comparing the alibis of a few people trapped in one house.

The investigation follows several convincing possibilities before revealing how the crimes connect. It is a good choice for readers who want a more disturbing mystery with a larger trail of clues.

A Detective Hole Novel

She Didn’t See It Coming by Shari Lapena

A woman disappears from her condominium without warning. She does not arrive at work, and no one can explain why the building’s security system does not show her leaving.

The people closest to her all have theories, but they also have information they would prefer to keep private. As investigators examine her marriage, friendships and neighbors, the list of possible explanations continues to grow.

The locked-building element makes the disappearance feel impossible, while the secrets surrounding it create several believable explanations.

This is a good final choice for readers who enjoy domestic mysteries where ordinary people become much more suspicious once someone starts asking the right questions.

She Didn’t See It Coming

Can You Actually Guess the Killer?

Some readers are naturally good at spotting patterns. Others have simply read enough murder mysteries to recognize the usual tricks.

A convincing mystery can make several answers seem possible at once. Every new clue settles one question while raising another.

The books on this list are especially good at keeping that uncertainty alive. They give readers enough information to form a theory without making it easy to know whether that theory is right.

That does not mean every solution is impossible to predict. Someone, somewhere, has probably guessed every fictional killer before the reveal. The fun is finding a mystery that keeps you uncertain long enough to question your answer.

If you correctly identify the killer in all fifteen of these books, you may need to stop reading mysteries and start solving them.
