In November 1966, reports of a strange winged figure began surfacing in and around Point Pleasant, West Virginia. Witnesses described a large, dark creature with glowing red eyes, and before long, the figure had a name: Mothman.
The sightings became closely associated with an area outside Point Pleasant known locally as the TNT area, the site of a former World War II munitions facility. Reports continued into 1967, while theories ranged from misidentified birds to something far stranger.
Then, on December 15, 1967, the Silver Bridge collapsed into the Ohio River during rush-hour traffic, killing 46 people. In the years that followed, the Mothman sightings and the bridge disaster became tangled together. Was Mothman an omen? A warning? Or were two unrelated events connected after the fact because they happened in the same place at nearly the same time?
More than half a century later, Mothman remains one of America’s best-known cryptid legends. There are explanations for parts of the story, but no explanation has ever managed to make the mystery disappear completely.
This tarot reading doesn’t attempt to prove whether Mothman existed or solve what happened in Point Pleasant. I’m simply following where the cards lead and seeing what they have to say about the mystery.
About This Reading
This reading uses tarot as a symbolic framework to explore the Mothman sightings, the witnesses, the connection to the Silver Bridge disaster, and why this story has survived for so long. The interpretations are not presented as factual claims.
This is part of my ongoing Unsolved Mystery Tarot Readings series, where I use tarot to explore mysteries, strange events, and stories that still don’t have a clear answer. A new reading is published every Tuesday at 10:00 AM.
I expected this reading to spend a lot of time trying to figure out what Mothman was. Instead, the cards kept circling around warnings that weren’t understood, things that never quite reached completion, and a community left carrying a mystery that still hasn’t gone away.
By the end of the reading, the question wasn’t just what people saw in Point Pleasant. It was whether the sightings and what happened afterward were connected at all.
If you like mysteries where even the possible explanations are strange, you might also want to read my Kentucky Meat Shower Tarot Reading, where I explored what may have caused pieces of meat to reportedly fall from the sky over Bath County, Kentucky, in 1876.
