On the morning of August 4, 1892, Andrew and Abby Borden were brutally murdered inside their home in Fall River, Massachusetts. Abby was killed first in an upstairs guest room. About an hour and a half later, Andrew was attacked while lying on a sofa downstairs. Both had been struck repeatedly with a hatchet.
The murders quickly became one of the most infamous criminal cases of the era. Andrew’s daughter Lizzie Borden was home that morning, along with the family’s maid, Bridget Sullivan. Lizzie soon became the focus of the investigation and was arrested a week later for the murders of her father and stepmother.
But the case against her was largely circumstantial. Investigators had no definitive murder weapon tied to Lizzie, no bloody clothing that established she had committed the murders, and no witness who saw the killer enter or leave the house. The investigation was also conducted at a time when forensic science and crime-scene procedures were nothing like they are today.
Lizzie was acquitted in June 1893. No one else was ever charged, leaving the murders officially unsolved. More than a century later, the case is still surrounded by the same question that followed Lizzie out of the courtroom: if she didn’t kill Andrew and Abby Borden, who did?
I originally did this tarot reading on December 27, 2025, using a twelve-card spread to look at the family dynamics, the investigation, the trial, and what may have been overlooked. On September 8, 2026, I returned to the case for five additional questions.
That second reading went somewhere I wasn’t expecting.
Instead of repeating the original spread, the cards became strangely focused on the Borden house itself—access, movement, closed doors, open doors, and thresholds. And then I realized something else about the five cards I had pulled.
Every single one belonged to the same suit.
The full reading includes the original twelve-card investigation, the new five-card follow-up, and how the two readings connect nearly nine months apart.
About This Reading
The original twelve-card spread looked beyond the familiar story and into the family dynamics, the atmosphere inside the Borden home, the investigation, the trial, and what may have been overlooked.
On September 8, 2026, I returned to the case. This time, I asked five new questions focused more closely on the morning of the murders—what was happening inside the house, how the killer gained access to the victims, how they moved through the home, what helped keep the truth hidden, and what we may still be missing.
As always, I use tarot as a way to explore the mystery, not as proof of what happened. The cards can raise questions, point out patterns, and sometimes take a reading in a direction I wasn’t expecting, but they can’t name a killer or establish guilt.
This reading is part of The Mystic Digest, my paid subscriber series exploring unsolved mysteries, strange history, hauntings, legends, and cases that still have unanswered questions.
