Sometimes I don’t want to start a book knowing that the whole thing is going to be over in a few hundred pages.
If I like the characters and the world, I want more of it. Give me vampires, witches, werewolves, magic, strange worlds and enough books to keep me busy for a while.
These fantasy and paranormal book series range from paranormal romance and urban fantasy to YA fantasy and magical worlds.

Adrian X Isolde
If vampires, fantasy and romance are your thing, Adrian X Isolde is an easy place to start.
This is definitely one for readers who want the romance to be a big part of the story instead of sitting quietly in the background. There are monsters, magic and plenty of danger mixed in with it.
Adrian X Isolde Series Collection By Scarlett St Clair
Princess Isolde agrees to marry the vampire king Adrian to protect her kingdom, even though she plans to kill him after the wedding. But her plan gets complicated as their attraction grows and she discovers there is much more happening inside Adrian’s court than she expected.
The Argeneau Series
The Argeneau books are for anyone who looks at a paranormal romance series and thinks, “But are there enough vampires?”
Yes. Yes, there are.
This is a long-running vampire romance series, which makes it a good choice if you’re specifically looking for something that can keep you reading for quite a while.

A Quick Bite
The Argeneau series follows a large family of vampires as different members find love, deal with dangerous enemies and try to keep their unusual lives hidden from the human world. Each book focuses on a different couple, but the Argeneau family and their supernatural world connect the series.
Black Dagger Brotherhood
Black Dagger Brotherhood is another one for vampire readers, but it leans darker.
The series mixes paranormal romance with an ongoing supernatural world, so you get different relationships without completely starting over every time you move on to another book.
And there are a lot of books here. This is not a weekend commitment.

Dark Lover
Dark Lover follows Wrath, the last purebred vampire and reluctant leader of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, as he agrees to protect the half-human daughter of one of his fallen warriors. As she is pulled into the vampire world, the two grow closer while the Brotherhood fights a dangerous enemy hunting their kind.
Immortals After Dark
If vampires alone aren’t enough, Immortals After Dark adds all kinds of supernatural creatures to the mix.
This is paranormal romance with vampires, Valkyries, werewolves and other immortals all living in the same world. Each book has its own romance, but the larger supernatural world continues around them.
This is another series where you can disappear for a while if you get hooked.
If vampire romance is what you’re here for, I also have a whole list of steamy vampire romance books.

The Warlord Wants Forever (Immortals After Dark Book 1)
The Warlord Wants Forever follows Valkyrie Myst, who is captured by vampire warlord Nikolai Wroth and discovers he believes she is his destined mate. Their battle of wills turns into a dangerous attraction as they get pulled deeper into the supernatural world of the Immortals After Dark series.
Mercy Thompson
Mercy Thompson is more urban fantasy than straight paranormal romance.
Mercy is a shapeshifter living in a world filled with werewolves, vampires, fae and plenty of supernatural problems that somehow keep becoming her problems.
If you like following the same main character across a long series instead of switching to a new couple with every book, this is probably more your speed.

The Mercy Thompson Collection Books 1-5
The Mercy Thompson Collection Books 1–5 follows Mercy, a shapeshifting mechanic who keeps getting pulled into trouble involving werewolves, vampires, fae and other supernatural creatures. The collection follows her through the first five books as her world gets more complicated and the dangers around her keep growing.
Mythverse
Mythverse mixes supernatural creatures with Greek mythology, which immediately makes it a little different from some of the vampire-heavy series on this list.
The books take place in an interconnected world with gods, monsters, witches, vampires and shifters.
Basically, if your paranormal reading tastes are less “pick one creature” and more “throw everything in there,” this might work.

Fire & Flood
Fire & Flood follows a woman pulled into a dangerous supernatural world where gods, monsters and ancient powers are very real. As she tries to understand what is happening around her, she becomes caught up in a much bigger conflict tied to the Mythverse.
Bloodlines
Bloodlines is a six-book YA paranormal series set in the same world as Vampire Academy.
There are vampires, magic, romance and all of the complications that come with trying to keep the supernatural world hidden from everyone else.
A six-book collection also gives you the very satisfying option of having the entire series sitting there waiting instead of finishing one and realizing you forgot to buy the next book.
Bloodlines 6 Books Collection Set
Bloodlines follows Sydney Sage, an Alchemist assigned to protect vampire princess Jill Dragomir while she is hidden away at a boarding school. Across the six-book series, Sydney gets pulled deeper into the vampire world, uncovers secrets within the Alchemists, and faces growing danger as her loyalties and relationships become more complicated.
Shades of Magic
For something that leans more toward fantasy, there is the Shades of Magic trilogy.
This one moves away from vampires and werewolves and into magic, alternate worlds and different versions of London.
And because it is a finished trilogy, this is a much less intimidating binge than starting one of those paranormal series with twenty-something books already waiting for you.
If you’re looking for more fantasy with magic and romance, I also have a list of fantasy books with powers and romance.
Shades of Magic Trilogy Boxed Set: A Darker Shade of Magic, A Gathering of Shadows, A Conjuring of Light
Kell is one of the last Antari―magicians with a rare, coveted ability to travel between parallel Londons; Red, Grey, White, and, once, Black. Unofficially, Kell is a smuggler, servicing people willing to pay for even the smallest glimpses of a world they’ll never see. It’s a defiant hobby with dangerous consequences.
The Accidental Reaper
The name The Accidental Reaper pretty much tells you this one is going to be a little different.
This is an urban fantasy series built around grim reapers, the balance between life and death and a main character who ends up much deeper in the supernatural world than she probably planned.
If you’ve had enough vampires for the moment, grim reapers are certainly one way to change things up.

Grim And Bare It (The Accidental Reaper Book 1)
Grim and Bare It follows a woman who unexpectedly becomes a grim reaper and is thrown into a supernatural world she knows almost nothing about. As she learns how her new role works, she has to deal with strange deaths, dangerous secrets and the fact that being responsible for the dead is a lot messier than she expected.
Twin Crowns
Twin Crowns brings some YA fantasy romance into the list.
It follows twin princesses and has magic, royalty, romance and all of the problems you would expect when crowns and kingdoms are involved.
This is probably the better choice here if you want fantasy without jumping into one of the huge paranormal series.
And if magical kingdoms are more your thing, I have another list of dark fantasy books set in magical kingdoms.

Twin Crowns
Twin Crowns follows twin sisters who were separated as babies and raised in very different worlds. One grows up as a princess, while the other is raised by witches and sent to take her sister’s place on the throne, setting off a story full of magic, mistaken identities, romance and royal chaos.
Which Fantasy or Paranormal Series Are You Starting?
Apparently “fantasy and paranormal” can mean anything from vampire romance to grim reapers to magical kingdoms.
Which is probably why I never get tired of this genre.
If you want a huge series you can live in for a while, Black Dagger Brotherhood, Immortals After Dark or Mercy Thompson give you plenty to work through.
If you would rather start with something that feels a little more manageable, Shades of Magic, Bloodlines or Twin Crowns might be a better place to begin.
And if you just want something other than another vampire series, there is always a grim reaper.
