The Bell Witch: A Supernatural Mystery Tarot Reading

Bell Witch tarot reading banner featuring tarot cards, an antique lantern and a rural Tennessee farmhouse in a dark, handcrafted historical collage.

In the early 1800s, John and Lucy Bell settled with their family along the Red River near what is now Adams, Tennessee. For more than a decade, their life on the farm appears to have been fairly ordinary. Then, sometime around 1816 or 1817, strange things reportedly began happening around their home.

The family heard scratching, knocking and other unexplained sounds. Blankets were pulled from beds. Family members claimed they were slapped, pinched and physically attacked by something they could not see. Eventually, the presence reportedly began speaking, repeating conversations, reciting prayers and arguing with people who came to investigate.

The activity seemed especially focused on John Bell and his youngest daughter, Betsy. The presence interfered with Betsy’s relationship with Joshua Gardner and appeared determined to prevent their marriage. John suffered from a strange illness during the same period, and after his death in 1820, the entity reportedly claimed responsibility.

The presence became known as “Kate” and was eventually connected to Kate Batts, a neighbor who was said to have a grievance against John Bell. Whether that identification came from the original events, local rumors or later retellings remains one of the biggest questions surrounding the story.

Over time, the Bell Witch became one of Tennessee’s most famous legends. Visitors came to the Bell home hoping to witness the activity for themselves, and each new account added another layer to the story. More than two centuries later, it is difficult to separate what may have happened inside the home from everything that was added afterward.

About This Reading

This tarot reading does not attempt to prove that the Bell family was haunted or establish the identity of whatever they believed was inside their home. It uses the cards as a symbolic way to explore the presence itself, why it may have targeted John and Betsy, what it wanted from the family and how the story changed over time.

This is part of The Mystic Digest, my ongoing paid subscriber series featuring full tarot readings about unsolved mysteries, strange history and stories that refuse to stay buried. A new reading is published every Tuesday at 10:00 AM Eastern.

The cards did not give me a simple ghost story. The deeper the reading went, the harder it became to tell where the haunting ended and the legend began.
