There are beach reads, and then there are my kind of beach reads.
Give me sunshine, turquoise water, a gorgeous resort, maybe a yacht or a cruise ship…
And then ruin everything.
Apparently I don’t want to read about people relaxing peacefully beside the ocean. I want somebody to disappear from the resort, find something they definitely should not have found while scuba diving, realize their traveling companion has been lying to them, or discover that the beautiful stranger at the pool may actually be trying to kill them.
Much better.
These thriller beach reads are made for summer vacations, beach bags, poolside reading, and cruise-ship balconies. Some take place on tropical islands. Others involve yachts, luxury cruises, beach houses, resorts, destination weddings, and coastal summer towns where everybody seems to have brought at least one terrible secret along with their sunscreen.
So grab the book, the beach towel, and the SPF.
The fictional vacationers can make the bad decisions for us.

If your vacation involves considerably more snow than sand, I also have a list of winter thrillers to read when you’re snowed in.
Tropical Paradise Goes Very Wrong
White sand. Clear water. Drinks by the pool.
Murder.
Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins
Lux thinks sailing to a remote island in the South Pacific sounds like exactly the escape she needs.
She and her boyfriend Nico agree to take two women, Brittany and Amma, to Meroe Island, an isolated paradise with beautiful beaches and a rather less beautiful history involving shipwrecks, cannibalism, and murder.
Another wealthy couple is already there when they arrive, and for a while the group settles into the fantasy of being completely off the grid.
Then another stranger appears.
Secrets start coming out.
Someone disappears.
And paradise becomes a considerably less relaxing place to be.
Beach-read factor: South Pacific island, sailboats, sandy beaches, cocktails, beautiful people behaving badly.
Good fit for: Readers who want an atmospheric vacation thriller where everyone seems suspicious.
Reckless Girls
A sailing trip to a remote South Pacific paradise turns deadly when secrets emerge among a group of travelers cut off from the rest of the world.
Deep Water by Emma Bamford
Jake and Virginie spend their savings on a yacht and set off to explore the world together.
Then they hear about a tiny island in the Indian Ocean with untouched beaches and very few visitors.
Obviously they go.
By the time a Navy vessel finds their damaged yacht months later, Jake is badly injured and Virginie is saying something nobody particularly wants to hear from the survivor of a tropical sailing adventure:
She killed them.
The story works backward from there, revealing what happened when their dream of sailing into paradise collided with the people already living there.
Beach-read factor: Yacht life, Malaysia, Indian Ocean, hidden beaches, tropical paradise.
Good fit for: Readers who like survival suspense, unreliable stories, and beautiful places that slowly start feeling dangerous.
Deep Water

He finds the beach—and discovers that the little utopia built there has some very dark cracks underneath the surface.
This one has been around longer than most of the books here, but it’s almost impossible to make a dark beach-reading list without it. The beach is not just scenery. The entire story is built around the idea of finding paradise and then discovering why maybe nobody should have found it.

Good fit for: Readers who prefer an investigative thriller or missing-person mystery with their vacation setting.

Final Thoughts
I have apparently developed a very specific definition of relaxation.
Beautiful water? Yes.
Sunshine? Absolutely.
A gorgeous beach or resort? Perfect.
Someone disappearing under suspicious circumstances?
Now we have a book.
These are the kinds of thrillers I want when I’m thinking about summer reading because the setting still feels like part of the vacation. You get the beach, the ocean, the cruise ship, the villa, the tropical resort, or the coastal town even while everything happening to the characters is making you very grateful that you’re just sitting there reading about it.
And that is the ideal arrangement.
They can investigate the murder.
I’ll be over here with the sunscreen.
And if you prefer your suspicious bodies of water a little calmer, you can also check out my lake thrillers filled with secrets, suspense, and small-town tension.
