On November 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his parents and four younger siblings inside their family home at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York. All six victims were found in their beds.
A little more than a year later, George and Kathy Lutz moved into the house with their three children and their dog. They knew about the murders, but the house had everything they wanted. It was large, close to the water and available for a price they could afford.
They lasted 28 days.
The Lutz family claimed they were driven out by something they could not explain. They described strange sounds and odors, doors opening and closing, disturbed sleep and changes in George’s behavior. George later said the activity kept building until he believed something terrible would happen if they stayed.
On January 14, 1976, they grabbed what they needed, took the children and their dog, and got out. They never lived in the house again.
Their story became Jay Anson’s 1977 book The Amityville Horror, followed by the 1979 movie and a franchise that is still going. Some people believe the Lutzes. Others believe the haunting was exaggerated or invented. Later owners who spoke publicly said they did not experience anything paranormal there.
What happened during those 28 days remains disputed. This reading looks at what the Lutz family may have experienced, what the murders could have left behind and how fear, family tension and money helped create the Amityville legend.
This Amityville tarot reading is part of my ongoing subscriber series, where I use tarot to explore unsolved mysteries, historical questions and stories that refuse to stay buried. A new reading is published every Tuesday at 10:00 AM.
This became the scariest tarot reading I have ever done. The cards did not give me a simple yes or no on whether the house was haunted. And when I asked the final question, the door did not open at all.
