Alexander the Great is one of those historical figures who never really stays inside the history books.

He was a king, a conqueror, a military genius, and a man whose name became so large that it nearly swallowed the person underneath. After his death, his empire fractured. His generals fought over what remained. His body became politically powerful in its own right. And then, because history loves to leave a candle burning in the strangest room, there is the matter of the tomb.

Alexander’s burial place was once known. Historical accounts place his body first in Egypt and later in Alexandria, but the tomb’s exact location is now unknown.

That is the part that always makes me pause.
