On the night of August 21, 1955, several adults and children were gathered at a farmhouse near Kelly, Kentucky. Billy Ray Taylor went outside to get water and came back claiming he had seen a bright object cross the sky and come down somewhere nearby.
Not long afterward, the people inside said small creatures began approaching the farmhouse. They described oversized heads, pointed ears, long arms, clawlike hands and large glowing eyes. The figures appeared at the doors and windows, moved through the trees and reportedly returned no matter how many times the men fired at them.
Eventually, the frightened family fled to the Hopkinsville police station. Officers searched the property but found no creatures, bodies or spacecraft. After the police left, the family said the beings returned.
The most familiar explanation is that Billy Ray saw a meteor and the family later mistook great horned owls for something much stranger. Owls could account for some of the reported features, but the theory has never answered every question about the night. More than seventy years later, the Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter remains one of Kentucky’s strangest stories.
This is not my first Kentucky mystery involving something strange coming down from the sky. In my Kentucky Meat Shower reading, witnesses were left trying to explain why pieces of meat suddenly fell over a Bath County farm. Here, the mystery begins with something Billy Ray Taylor claimed he saw crossing the sky and coming down near the house.
About This Reading
This reading uses tarot to explore the unanswered questions surrounding the Kelly-Hopkinsville encounter. It does not prove what happened or turn the cards into historical evidence. It follows the story they told and leaves room for the parts we still cannot explain.
This is part of The Mystic Digest, my ongoing series of full tarot readings and mystery deep dives for paid subscribers. A new reading is published every Tuesday at 10:00 AM Eastern.
I expected the cards to lean toward aliens, owls or a hoax. Instead, the cards immediately made me question Billy Ray Taylor’s version of what he saw in the sky. But that does not mean nothing happened outside the farmhouse.
