Introduction
If you’re a fan of cooperative games, survival stories, and gritty post-apocalyptic themes, Dead of Winter: A Crossroads Game by Plaid Hat Games is a must-try. Designed by Jon Gilmour and Isaac Vega, this game drops you and your friends into a harsh winter wasteland where survival is never guaranteed. It’s the perfect game to play on a cold winter evening, especially if you’re a fan of The Walking Dead or similar zombie-survival tales.
Charmed and Spooked Earring Set | Avon
An earring set made for mixing, matching and mischief! This frightfully fun collection includes four pairs of Halloween-themed earrings: jack-o’-lanterns, spiders, skeletons, and goldtone spiderwebs.
After several playthroughs, I can confidently say this is one of the best thematic co-op board games out there—though not without a few minor flaws. Read on to see why I rate Dead of Winter an 8/10.
Theme and Setting: Survival in a Frozen Apocalypse
The first thing that stands out about Dead of Winter is its immersive theme. The game is set in a post-apocalyptic winter where you and your group of survivors must band together to fend off zombies, gather supplies, and complete objectives. But survival isn’t easy: food is scarce, morale can plummet, and sometimes the greatest danger isn’t the undead but betrayal from within your group.
This game’s storytelling element, combined with its bleak winter setting, pulls you in immediately. For fans of The Walking Dead, the tension and tough moral choices will feel right at home. You’ll constantly question whether to help others or pursue your own secret agenda—and those decisions can make or break your colony.
The Co-Op Experience: Strength in Numbers
At its heart, Dead of Winter is a cooperative game. Players work together to meet the main objective while balancing resources like food and fuel, managing colony morale, and fending off zombie hordes. However, the game throws in a brilliant twist: secret objectives.
While everyone works toward the group’s success, each player has their own personal goal. Sometimes it aligns perfectly with the colony’s survival, but sometimes… well, let’s just say betrayal is a very real possibility. This semi-cooperative nature adds layers of tension and replayability that make every game feel unique.
One of my favorite mechanic are the Crossroads cards. At the start of each player’s turn, another player draws a Crossroads card, which triggers a story event if certain conditions are met. These unexpected moments add surprise, immersion, and sometimes brutal consequences that keep the game fresh.
Replayability: Endless Scenarios & Surprises
Replayability is where Dead of Winter really shines. The game offers multiple scenarios with unique objectives, and the randomized Crossroads cards ensure no two games play out the same way. With a large cast of survivor characters (each with their own abilities and quirks), every session feels like a new story.
Add in the secret objectives, and you have a game that stays engaging for countless playthroughs. Whether you’re surviving together or dealing with a traitor, the dynamics change every time, making this a great addition to any board game night.
Components: Could Be Better
Now, let’s talk about the game’s components—because while the theme and gameplay are stellar, the physical pieces leave a bit to be desired.
The standees for the survivors and zombies are fine, but the location boards (where players send survivors to scavenge) are disappointingly thin. In fact, I’ve seriously considered laminating them to make them more durable. For a game this immersive, it’s a shame the components don’t quite live up to the rest of the experience.
That said, the artwork is fantastic. The snowy apocalypse, grim survivors, and hordes of zombies are brought to life with dark, atmospheric illustrations that perfectly suit the theme.
Who Should Play Dead of Winter?
If you love survival horror, team-based games, and tense decision-making, Dead of Winter is a no-brainer. It’s particularly perfect for:
- Fans of The Walking Dead: The game’s grim survival theme, focus on tough choices, and potential betrayals make it feel like an episode of the show.
- Cooperative Game Enthusiasts: If you enjoy games like Pandemic or Forbidden Island but want more storytelling and complexity, this is for you.
- Winter-Themed Game Nights: There’s something about playing this during the cold months that enhances the chilling atmosphere.
Final Thoughts: 8/10 – A Co-Op Game Worth Playing
Dead of Winter isn’t perfect, but its immersive theme, engaging co-op mechanics, and high replayability make it a standout in the board game world. While the components could use a little upgrade, the overall experience is so compelling that it’s easy to overlook those minor flaws.
Whether you’re navigating moral dilemmas, dealing with a traitor, or just trying to keep your colony alive, Dead of Winter delivers a unique and memorable experience every time.
