My love for reading started with my grandmother.
She used to take my sister and me to a local used bookstore—the kind that traded everything from paperbacks to forgotten treasures. On Saturdays, we’d wander the aisles, picking out books using her store credit from trades. That’s where I found my first gothic novel.
I still remember the cover more than anything else: a woman running from a looming house in the dark, terror written across her face. It was one of those classic Zebra Gothic Romance paperbacks. I don’t remember the title—but I remember the feeling.
And that feeling stuck.
Chasing That Gothic Feeling
Those old Zebra Gothic Romance books—mostly from the ’80s and ’90s—are harder to find now. Every once in a while, I come across one and immediately add it to my collection.
They may have had familiar plots, but that didn’t matter. The atmosphere, the tension, the crumbling estates, the sense that something just wasn’t right… that’s what kept me hooked.
This list isn’t made up of those exact books—but it does capture that same energy.
Think:
- Isolated mansions
- Secrets buried in the past
- Suspicious love interests
- Heroines who slowly realize they’re in danger
Some are modern, some lean more thriller than romance—but they all carry that gothic DNA.

That same feeling I had as a kid, staring at that Zebra paperback cover?
These books bring it right back.
