Between 1968 and 1969, an unidentified killer attacked several people in Northern California. He became known as the Zodiac through the letters and ciphers he sent to newspapers and law enforcement. Some of those messages included threats, claims about the crimes and the now-famous crosshair-like symbol associated with the Zodiac name.
The investigation was complicated from the beginning. The crimes crossed jurisdictions, different law enforcement agencies were involved, and investigators were working without the forensic technology available today. Witness accounts, physical evidence and the letters all became pieces of a case that never came together into one definitive answer.
Decades later, there is still no universally accepted identification of the Zodiac Killer. Suspects have come and gone, theories continue to surface, and people are still studying the letters, ciphers and evidence. But none of it has produced the proof needed to finally put a name to the killer.
I’m not asking the cards to identify the Zodiac Killer or solve the case. Instead, I want to look at what was happening around this mystery: the communication, the pressure on investigators, what may have been missed and why this case has remained unresolved for so long.
