In the Book of Genesis, chapters 6 through 9, the story of Noah’s Ark unfolds as one of the most well-known narratives in the Bible. According to the text, humanity had become corrupt and violent, and God determined that the earth would be cleansed through a great flood. One man, Noah, is described as righteous in his generation. He is instructed to build a massive ark of gopher wood, seal it with pitch, and prepare to survive what is coming.

Noah is told to bring his family aboard—his wife, his three sons, and their wives—along with pairs of animals, and in some cases additional clean animals for sacrifice. The rain falls for forty days and forty nights. The waters rise, covering even the highest mountains. All living things outside the ark perish.

After months adrift, the ark comes to rest on the mountains of Ararat. Noah sends out birds to test whether dry land has returned. Eventually, the waters recede. The family disembarks. Noah builds an altar and offers sacrifices. God establishes a covenant, promising never again to destroy the earth by flood, placing a rainbow in the sky as a sign of that promise.

The story ends not with restoration of the old world, but with the beginning of a new one—descended from a single family.
