Family Secrets, Ghosts, and Gothic Suspense

Dahlia Lighthouse was raised in an isolated mansion by parents who treated true crime like a family religion. She returns home after her father’s death, only for the family to discover another body already buried in his grave. The remains belong to Dahlia’s twin brother, who disappeared ten years earlier. To find out who killed him, Dahlia has to look much more closely at the childhood her parents taught her to accept as normal.

The secluded mansion also earned this book a place on my list of fiction books set in Connecticut.

Decades later, journalist Fiona Sheridan returns to the abandoned school while investigating a discovery connected to its past—and to the unsolved murder of her own sister. Between the abandoned school and the rumors of a ghost roaming its grounds, this is not a mystery I would want to read while sitting alone in an empty building.

Quinn Maybrook has barely settled into the struggling town of Kettle Springs when its corn-syrup mascot, Frendo the Clown, becomes the face of a very real killing spree. The town’s adults and teenagers are already at war over what Kettle Springs should become, and someone has decided that murder is the easiest way to settle the argument. It is technically YA, but it reads like the kind of fast, messy slasher movie that plenty of adult horror fans already love.

Clown in a Cornfield

A Halloween book does not have to be terrifying. You can go cozy with a curse, creepy with a haunted house, or straight into slasher territory with a killer clown. Just be careful which one you pick up before bed, because a few of these may have you noticing every little noise in the house.

Books are not the only way to get into the Halloween mood. If you want to take the theme to game night, I also have a list of spooky board games to play this Halloween season.

And if you want to read cards after all those books, The Halloween Tarot in a Tin keeps the theme going.
