The Woman in White

Resurrection Mary has been walking the same stretch of road for nearly a century—or at least that is what the stories say.

She is usually described as a young blonde woman in a white dancing dress. Sometimes she appears near a ballroom. Sometimes she walks alone along Archer Avenue. Sometimes she accepts a ride, only to disappear as the car approaches Resurrection Cemetery outside Chicago.

Her beginning is much less certain. Depending on the version, Mary died in a car crash on her way to a dance or was struck by a driver after leaving one. Some stories include an argument with her date. Others begin after her death, with a woman appearing at a dance hall and asking a stranger to take her home. The Chicago History Museum notes that researchers have tried to identify her, but no answer has ever been proven.

That uncertainty is what interested me. I was not asking the cards to confirm every detail people have repeated about her. I wanted to know who the woman behind the story might have been, what may have happened on the night behind the legend and why something still seems to be traveling between the ballroom, the road and the cemetery.

This reading took a darker turn than I expected. By the end, it did not feel like Mary was simply lost or trying to find her way home. It felt like she was trapped inside a journey she never finished.
